Annual Fundraising Dinner Delivered Message of Healing

On Thursday, April 5th, Casa de Misericordia gathered with hundreds of friends and donors from throughout the community at the annual fundraising dinner held at the IBC Annex. A very special thank you to IBC for generously donating the venue, food, and beverages for the our event once again.  Supporters enjoyed fellowship over dinner and bid on items in the silent auction. Casa could not continue to serve victims of domestic violence without the incredible support from the community. We are grateful to all who donated their time, talents, and money in an effort to show those who are abused that there is help available and that they are not alone.

The evening shed light on how difficult it can be to leave an abusive relationship, and the impact just one person reaching out can make in the life of a victim who has been isolated and feels trapped. Two survivors of domestic violence shared their testimonies of suffering abuse, trying to escape, and ultimately finding freedom. Glennon Doyle, author of two New York Times best-selling memoirs, delivered a powerful message as the keynote speaker. She spoke of the struggles she has faced and the new chapters that have begun after she has hit rock bottom. "It's the crucifixion before the resurrection," she shared, "like we just celebrated (Easter)."

Prior to the event, Glennon devoted several hours to visiting with Casa de Misericordia staff and touring the Education Center, McCauley Service Center, and the shelter. She was in no rush to leave, as she soaked up every word regarding the services offered to empower women and their children to begin new lives after suffering domestic violence. Glennon sat to share her message in a relaxed interview-style presentation. She shared that upon leaving Casa, she called her non-profit organization, Together Rising, to share with them the work that Casa does. Glennon announced that Together Rising which focuses on "turning heartache into action" decided to donate $10,000 to support Casa's work.
Below is an excerpt from Glennon's blog, Momastery:

Every morning, I open my eyes and immediately understand that am still that girl on the bathroom floor, holding that pregnancy test like a terrifying invitation, trying to decide whether to stay down on the cold floor or get up and show up for my life.
Most days I decide to show up, because I was right when I was little. Life is brutal. But it's also beautiful. Brutiful, I call it. Life's brutal and beautiful are woven together so tightly that they can't be separated. Reject the brutal, reject the beauty. So now I embrace both, and I live well and hard and real.
